Justice for Abhaya: The Unanswered Questions and Unfulfilled Duties of Mamata Banerjee

In a horrifying incident at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, a postgraduate trainee doctor, Abhaya, was brutally gang-raped and murdered. As per the postmortem report, her body bore signs of severe violence: she was strangled to death, her thyroid cartilage broken, her private parts tortured, and her body marred with injuries. The level of brutality was such that shards of glass from her spectacles had entered her eyes.

The immediate aftermath of the crime saw shocking failures from those responsible for law and order. Republic World News TV's Arnab Goswami and all national news televisions questioned Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of failing in her duties, questioning how mobsters could infiltrate the crime scene in such numbers. His demands for accountability highlighted the severe lapses in security and justice.

Mamata Banerjee, who holds the roles of Chief Minister, Health Minister, and Home Minister, has come under intense scrutiny. Instead of ensuring justice, there are allegations of her trying to hide the accused, destroy evidence, and misinform Abhaya’s parents about her death. The police, under her administration, have been accused of abetting the crime, further tarnishing the state's commitment to justice.

The ground reality is a testament to the public’s outrage. Doctors, lawyers, students, and citizens of Bengal have taken to the streets, demanding justice for Abhaya. Their unified voice underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for accountability.

In light of these events, it is clear that Mamata Banerjee must resign from her positions as Chief Minister, Health Minister, and Home Minister. Her failure to protect the citizens and secure justice for Abhaya proves she is unfit for these roles. Adding to the disgrace, not a single woman minister has condemned this heinous crime.

Justice for Abhaya is not just a demand but a necessity. The perpetrators must be brought to justice, and those who failed in their duties must be held accountable. Bengal deserves better leadership—one that stands for the safety and justice of its people.
