Neerja’s extraordinary bravery unfolded when armed terrorists seized control of the flight at Karachi airport, aiming to use the passengers as bargaining tools. Rather than succumbing to fear, Neerja risked her life to prevent the terrorists from harming the passengers, even managing to alert the cockpit crew to escape, thus preventing the plane from taking off. Tragically, she was shot while shielding three children, becoming one of the youngest recipients of the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award.
Neerja received widespread acclaim for its compelling storytelling and Sonam Kapoor’s heartfelt performance. The film resonated deeply with audiences, earning a robust box office total of ₹135 crore globally. Beyond financial success, Neerja stands as a lasting tribute to a national hero whose bravery and selflessness continue to inspire.
