Calicut University's recent decision to lease 42 acres of its land adjacent to the national highway for the construction of a private football stadium has ignited significant controversy. While the project, which includes plans for a swimming pool and commercial complex, aims to enhance sports infrastructure, it has faced opposition from the Save University Campaign Committee. The committee alleges that this move facilitates a land grab by private entities under the guise of development and has petitioned the Governor to intervene.
Further complicating matters, concerns have been raised regarding Kerala University's previous experience with land leases. The Greenfield International Stadium, constructed on university land, has accumulated lease arrears amounting to approximately ₹84 crore as of December 2022, with no apparent steps taken to recover these dues.
This situation underscores the need for transparent and accountable management of public university assets to prevent potential misuse and financial liabilities.
