"‘Sharbat Jihad’ Sparks Legal Firestorm: Delhi High Court Slams Baba Ramdev’s Communal Remark"

Delhi High Court criticizes Baba Ramdev for 'Sharbat Jihad' remark targeting Rooh Afza, highlighting the communal implications of his statement.

In a significant legal development, the Delhi High Court has strongly criticized yoga guru Baba Ramdev for his controversial "Sharbat Jihad" remark, which allegedly targeted Hamdard's popular beverage, Rooh Afza. Justice Amit Bansal described the statement as "indefensible" and stated that it "shocks the conscience of the court." The court's reaction came after a video surfaced from Ramdev’s official X account, in which he promoted Patanjali’s Gulab Sharbat while implying that proceeds from Rooh Afza sales were used to fund mosques and madrasas. In contrast, he claimed that purchasing Patanjali's product would support gurukuls and Hindu educational institutions. Hamdard Laboratories filed a legal petition against Ramdev, accusing him of making defamatory and communal statements. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Hamdard, argued that Ramdev's remarks amounted to hate speech and were intended to incite communal divisions. Despite not naming Hamdard directly, the implications of Ramdev's statements have led to widespread criticism and legal scrutiny. The court has indicated that it will take up the matter again after some time.
